Coconut oil doesn't start as oil — it starts as a mature coconut. Here's the general path from harvested coconut to bottled or bulk-packed oil.
1. Harvesting & Husking
Mature coconuts are harvested and de-husked, separating the fibrous outer husk from the hard shell and kernel inside.
2. Coconut Busting & Copra Production
The shell is broken open ("busting") and the white kernel is removed and dried — this dried kernel is copra. Drying can happen through sun-drying, smoke-drying, or kiln-drying, and how it's done affects the copra's final moisture content and quality.
3. Oil Extraction
Dried copra is fed into an expeller (a mechanical press) that extracts crude coconut oil through pressure. This is the same basic mechanism whether a facility calls its process "cold-pressed" or standard expeller-pressing — the difference generally comes down to whether heat is deliberately applied during pressing.
4. Filtration & Storage
Freshly pressed oil passes through filtration to remove sediment and particulates, then moves into storage tanks before packing.
5. Packing
From storage, oil is packed into retail formats (pouches, canes/jerry cans) or loaded in bulk for direct despatch to business buyers.
